Grandma Rita’s Soft Butter Rolls
(Perfectly soft, buttery, and nostalgic)
Ingredients:
¾ cup milk
¼ cup butter
¼ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
4½ teaspoons active dry yeast
½ cup warm water (110 °F / 45 °C)
3½ cups bread flour (more if needed)
1 egg, lightly beaten
Extra flour for dusting and dusting surface
Instructions:
1. Heat the milk until it starts to bubble slightly. Stir in butter, sugar, and salt. Let it cool until it’s under 110 °F (warm to the touch).
2. In another bowl, dissolve yeast and the teaspoon of sugar in warm water. Let it sit until creamy and foamy (about 10 minutes).
3. Combine the cooled milk mixture with the yeast mixture. Add 2 cups of flour and the egg; mix until smooth.
4. Gradually add remaining flour (about half-cup at a time), mixing until the dough is smooth and slightly tacky. Knead lightly on a floured surface.
5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl, turning once to coat. Cover and let it rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes.
6. Divide the dough into 18 pieces, shape into balls, and place on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for another 30 minutes.
7. Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175 °C) and bake the rolls until golden, about 15 minutes.
8. Enjoy them warm, straight from the oven!
